Our Goodwood Festival of Speed 2003 Downhill Racer

80x1.gif (49 bytes) aving dipped a toe in the water in 2002 we returned to Goodwood in 2003 with a new improved downhill racer modelled on the Barber Warnock Special, a Model T Ford based racing car as driven by Stirling Moss's father Alfred at Indianapolis in 1924 to a very creditable 14th place.

Suffice to say that we had our moments, on Saturday winning our race against some very stiff opposition by Timm Gunn in the VSCC car by the slimmest of margins.

More later but for now, courtesy of top motorsports photographer Ralph Hardwick, the first photographs to hit the street - our driver Nick Plane looking triumphant immediately after crossing the line. The white pipe is one of our demon tweaks, one of two extractor pipes feeding air out from the front bulkhead to reduce the effective frontal area. Judging from the way it is stretched out like a windsock they obviously worked well. On the Sunday the wind from the south side of the track was very strong so the high side aspect of the bodywork combined with the faired in wheels didn't do us any favours. Obviously if you want to build a replica you have to live with the profile.

Our interview for the cameras at the Brooklands Society tent with Stirling Moss sitting in a Frontenac Ford racer very similar to the one his father built for himself and then raced at Brooklands in 1925. Susie Moss is looking at the strange pedal layout. None of us could work out what they did but they would certainly cause a stir in Sainsburys' car park. Stirling wanted to know where the floorboards were. Bit like one of Colin Chapman's Lotuses at the end of lap 2. Most of the time one of the marshalls would have them.

And . . . . . . our soapbox team fooling around as usual. Left to right: Harry Titherley, Stirling, Roger Woodbridge, Ancien Pilote Nick Plane, Susie, Alex Postan and of course your trusty vebbmeister. Those caps? Made to order for us in the tradition of the great Louis Zborowski by Pat Gazley in Toronto. It took her two attempts to get them tasteless enough but by jove what an eyeful and impossible to lose your team members in amongst the crowds which was handy.

Watch this space, I will be putting pen to paper at greater length over the next few days. Our downhill racer is now on display at Brooklands so if you want to see it up close get down there quick because come November it will be doing the rounds of the local schools for educational purposes - 'How to make a plank of wood go down a hill fast' I suppose. Or something like that.
