1935 BMW 315

One of the earlier BMW sports cars was the 315, the predecessor to the 328s with a 1,500 c.c. straight six triple Solex downdraft carburettor engine and a speedo which went up to 140 kph. This one was imported from Germany after the war by an American airman and later rebuilt by Dick Titherley from a state in which it was a non-runner, complete with its original black paintwork but with no back or front wings, although it did still have the coat of arms on the drivers' door, presumably of its first German owner. The front wings are from a scrapped Lagonda, suitably cut to shape after having been acquired for a few shillings from a Liverpool scrapyard. The car was re-sprayed in cream and registered as PTJ 712. It was later sold for £150 and has never been seen since. Has it been scrapped, re-registered or exported? The BMW Owners Club in the U.K. have no record of it but if you know of its whereabouts I would dearly like to hear from you. E-mail me at robt@hartlana.co.uk if you have any information. If you are the owner I have more details of its history available - it was the first car I ever drove - at the age of ten!
