This is the car which Whitney Straight bought from Tim Birkin during his final year at Oxford and raced in 1933 causing a great sensation by winning the Mountain Championship at Brooklands at 73.64 mph, breaking Tim Birkin's 1931 record in the process. It should not be confused with the three later 2.9 litre Maseratis which he purchased directly from the factory and modified extensively, forming his own team with drivers such as Dick Seaman and Buddy Featherstonhaugh..
The Maserati returned to Brooklands for the
first time in 26 years when it attended our 1997 Reunion. This followed a chance
conversation between it's owner Dean Butler and Rob Titherley in the Brooklands Society
marquee at the 1997 Goodwood Festival of Speed when Dean was looking through some of our
archive photographs and spotted his car in the Brooklands paddock in a picture dated about
1934. The car has returned regularly since then, it's last visit at the time of writing
being to AutoItalia Day 1998 when it picked up two large cups in recognition of it's
importance and outstanding condition. That's Dean in the grey sweater - well you would be
smiling too if you owned it wouldn't you?
We will be publishing more detailed pictures in due course.
