| This is the ex Jacques Lafitte 1980 3 litre ground-effects
car which dominated the start of the 1980 World Championship. The designer was Gerard Ducarouge who built an exceptionally strong tub to withstand the downforces associated with this type of car. |
The classical downforce effect car used its undertray to
exploit the vacuum effect created by increasing the air velocity so as to decrease air
pressure thus sucking it down on to the track surface. It is exactly the same principal which applies to lifting an aircraft wing by its top surface as velocity increases. |
