| In 1989 X2 ended up back in the
motor trade to be subsequently purchased by Nick Howell who after using it for a year
started upon a rebuild in 1991. Seven years later the car emerged once again after Nick contacted the Goodwood Festival of Speed Organisers to see if they would be interested in having the car perform on the hill. Their reply was, "Only if you bring those square wheels along that we have seen on the old photographs." Which he duly did, although at 1/125th of a second shutter speed they don't show up quite as well.

The Straker Squire X2 has not been
over-restored, a great relief to all those who know the cars history. You can still see
the hammer marks on the chassis where it was knocked into shape and of course the car
still carries Bertie Moir's dazzle paintwork finish - the thing that makes it instantly
recognisable to everyone who has read about it, Brooklands expert or not. Nick decided in 1998 that he was ready to try out a new car and X2 was put up for sale at auction where as is the way of things it did not sell instantly but was to find a new owner a short time later. It is now in the capable hands of Jonathan Procter who plans to show it at the Hurlingham Club and Pebble Beach in 1999. He has no plans to race X2 but the car is a passport to many events so keep an eye out for it. You are bound to see it out and about. |
