1955 Lister Bristol 2 litre and 1955 Bristol 450SS

Eight Lister Bristols were built during 1955 this one being the only surviving example. When rear engined racing cars and the E-Type Jaguar started to appear widely in the sixties Listers became less competitive and less desirable which naturally led to their demise and disappearance. Now of course Lister Jags and Lister Bristols are highly prized. This car is chassis BHL 4 driven by Jack Sears in its heyday, now entered at Goodwood by Paul Roberts and driven by John Mayston-Taylor.

The silver car behind, number 93, is a 1955 Bristol 450SS 2 litre car, designed as a works run endurance sports car, having an aerodynamic body mounted on an E.R.A. G-type twin tube Formula 2 chassis - some time after Raymond Mays had departed to develop the B.R.M.

Three of these cars finished in the order: 7th driven by Wilson/Mayers, 8th, Keen/Line and 9th, Wisdom/Fairman,  in the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hour race behind three 1.5 litre Porsche 550s which had been able to maintain a faster pace over the race distance. This was the fateful race in which the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR driven by Pierre Levegh crashed opposite the pits after a collision and disintegrated, killing 81 spectators and injuring many more. The race was won by Mike Hawthorne and Ivor Bueb in a D-Type Jaguar.
