ARLIER THIS YEAR Prudential Assurance bought land within the Brooklands Track area adjacent to the museum.

They have revived a 13 year old planning permission given before the museum opened and their developers Helical Bar have now submitted a £200 million plan to erect 5 office blocks capable of housing up to 3,000 workers next to the museum.  They are also proposing a multi-storey car park opposite, adjoining the Malcolm Campbell (of Bluebird and Land Speed Record fame) circuit, opened in 1937, which currently serves as the main entrance to the museum. This car park sounds particularly hideous.

Brooklands Museum now has 115,000 visitors a year but with gross profits of £43.5 million a year Helical Bar dwarfs Brooklands Museum financially.

Brooklands in 1926. World's first racetrack, opened in 1907 and the site in 1908 of the first flight by an Englishman in his own aeroplane. 2.7 miles of banked concrete track now under threat yet again.
Over the last 30 years there has been extensive development at Brooklands which has seen wanton destruction of parts of the track and its surroundings on a depressingly substantial scale. By following a programme of constructive dialogue and firm objection we have prevented various developers from destroying most of the original 1907 track and the infield section of the 1937 Campbell Circuit.

There is thankfully still quite a lot left - and what is left must be preserved. As one of the hundreds of people who have e-mailed or sent letters of objection to Elmbridge Borough Council says: "Extinction is forever." The time to stop wrecking Brooklands once and for all has arrived. Help us now - you might not get another chance!
