Group 9 - fifty years of post war Le Mans

G99026.jpg (37692 bytes) 1952 Cunningham C4R 5.4 litre
This is chassis R5217 driven at Goodwood by Scott George.

The car finished fourth in the 1952 Le Mans co-driven by Bill Spear although Briggs Cunningham spent twenty of the twenty four hours in the driving seat nursing a slipping clutch to the finish line.

All of the Briggs Cunningham cars can be seen at the Collier Automotive Museum.

1953 Allard J2R - 6.9 litre
This has to be Sydney Allard's greatest car with looks considerably more modern than the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally winning P-Type.

This Le Mans model was owned at one time by General Curtis 'Bombs Away' Le May and currently resides in the Dean Butler stable.

Very desirable but totally different from most other Allards other than the later Palm Beach tourer.

Most people remember the Clapham built Allards for the Ford V8 flat top K and M-Type convertibles or the very ugly P-Type saloon, all with split front axles from the early trials days.

The C-Type and Cobra like fifties sports cars followed on from the J-Type racers and included the small Ford Zephyr engined Palm Beach tourer which looked something like this car and was a departure from the earlier designs.
