From hot air to air cool, 1890 - 1915

Mercedes 28/32 - 5.3-litre (1904)

Honeycomb radiator, gated gearchange and
mechanical inlet valves were all innovations by Wilhelm Maybach the man who built the first Mercedes in 1901, later to build aero engines and Maybach luxury cars.This is a smaller version of the Gordon Bennett winning 60hp.

1911 Austro-Daimler Prince Henry - 5.8 litre

In the 1880s Gottlieb Daimler, in conjunction with Maybach developed the first internal combustion engine, based on the Otto cycle, light enough to be used in a small vehicle - the 1886 Daimler.

In 1906 the Austrian part of  Daimler was made independent and went on to build some exceptional cars designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

G99163.jpg (28431 bytes) The Prince Henry Trials prompted their first true 'sports car' and in 1911 Ferdinand Porsche won the trials in a sister car. This is chassis '716' which was shipped to the USA in 1910, to return 90 years later for Goodwood sporting a unique U.S. built body.

Driven by Roger Collings, a prime mover in the world of old cars, retired VSCC President and aero-engined special builder.
